Stop & Go

Stop & Go is a legendary yo-yo trick that creates the illusion of the yo-yo stopping completely in your hands before spinning again. It combines precise timing with a smooth restart, making it one of the most satisfying tricks for beginners to master.

How to do Stop & Go

Start with a Sleeper and enter an Undermount. Bring both hands together and prepare to catch the spinning yo-yo between your palms. When you're ready, quickly pull both hands upward while catching the yo-yo between them.

Restarting the spin

Once you've caught the yo-yo, keep both your hands and the yo-yo as still as possible. Pull your throwing hand downward while keeping your non-throw hand raised, making sure the string stays on your finger. This will cause the yo-yo to start spinning again. Finally, give the string a tug to return the yo-yo to your hand.

Which yo-yo should you start with?

The best choice for beginners is a responsive yo-yo—a yo-yo that automatically returns with a tug. You don't need to worry about advanced techniques yet. Just focus on making a good throw, keeping the yo-yo spinning, and bringing it back to your hand.

Benefits of responsive yo-yos

  • Simple and intuitive to use
  • Returns with a classic tug
  • Reliable and durable construction
