Yoyo not working? Common causes

Sometimes a yoyo won't spin, comes back when it shouldn't, or simply behaves strangely. In most cases, it's a minor issue that you can fix at home in just a few minutes.

First, make sure you have the right yoyo

If you have a yoyo that is suitable for your style and skill level (ideally one of the proven models we sell), there's a good chance the problem is simply with the string, bearing, or response system (pads).

1) String

Check whether there is a knot in the string or directly around the bearing. If there is, untangle it. Another common problem is that the string gets caught between the bearing and the yoyo body – in that case, carefully unscrew the yoyo, remove the string, screw the yoyo back together, and attach the string correctly again.

2) Bearing

The most common problem is the bearing. Even a tiny speck of dust, dirt, or other debris can cause the yoyo to behave differently than it should. This is normal – sooner or later, it happens to almost every yoyo player.

3) Pads

The problem can also be caused by the pads (rubber rings next to the bearing), which help with the yoyo's response and control. They need to be replaced from time to time (every 2–3 months of regular yoyoing is a good guideline).

Simply check which pads fit your yoyo (many models use narrow YYF pads) and stick the new ones in place of the old ones.
