Breakaway is one of the most important throws in modern yoyoing. Many tricks are based on the Trapeze mount, and without a solid Breakaway you will make learning them much harder.
Hold the yoyo like you would for a Sleeper, lift your hand up, but this time keep it next to your body. Throw the yoyo away from you (not straight down), let it swing out in front of you, and once it reaches around shoulder height, give it a small tug to bring it back into your hand.
It helps to slightly turn your body to the side and make sure the throw is really going "away from your body". Just like with Sleeper, try to throw the yoyo straight. If it goes sideways, it will be much harder to control and the following tricks will become unnecessarily difficult.
Tip: If you are not sure whether your yoyo is traveling straight, record yourself from the front on your phone. With Breakaway, it is often just a small detail in your wrist movement or the moment when you release the yoyo.
The best choice is to start with a responsive yoyo – a beginner-friendly yoyo that automatically returns with a tug. You don't need to worry about complicated tricks or techniques – just learn how to throw it, spin it, and bring the yoyo back.
